May-June Insects (MANAS)

These two pests are often confused with each other. One is Polyphylla fullo (June beetle), and the other is Melolontha melolontha (May beetle). Both pests belong to the Scarabaeidae family, and their life cycles, types of damage, and control methods are generally very similar.

The larvae of both species are plump, white, and C-shaped, and they feed on plant roots. With rising temperatures, adults begin to emerge from the soil in April–May.

May beetle (Melolontha melolontha L.)

Adults are usually reddish-brown in color. Females have small antennae, while males have large, fan-shaped antennae. The abdomen is shiny black, with five triangular white spots along the sides.

June beetle (Polyphylla fullo L.)

Adults have a body length of 28–40 mm, and males have fan-shaped antennae. The body is reddish-brown in color and completely covered with very dense white scales arranged in small patch-like sections.

Adults fly after sunset in June–July and have a strong attraction to light sources. They typically complete one generation every 2–2.5 years.

Manas Damage and Distribution
The main damage is caused by the larvae, which feed on the roots of fruit seedlings and trees. In nurseries, even the presence of a single larva on a plant’s root system can cause significant damage. If the feeding damage reaches the cambium layer, the plant dies. Therefore, this pest is especially important for nurseries.

Which Plant Groups is Bioteam Used On?
Apple, strawberry, hazelnut, grapevine, turf areas, ornamental plants, pear, plum, cherry, quince, peach, and apricot are among its preferred hosts. Damage is more severe in stone fruit species and in sandy, humus-rich soils.

How Should Bioteam Be Applied?
Correct and complete applications significantly increase the biological effectiveness of Bioteam. Please carefully read and fully follow the step-by-step instructions before application.

What Should Be Considered Before Applying Bioteam?

Packaging Selection and Storage Conditions

  • Bioteam is available in packages containing 500 million, 250 million, and 50 million biological control agents.
  • Select the appropriate package so that each tree receives 0.5 million agents.
  • Once opened, the package must be used completely.
  • Always check the expiration date before use.
  • As a biological product, its shelf life is maximum 1 month.
  • If not used immediately after delivery, it must be stored at 2–6 °C in a dark environment.
  • It is active between 8–28 °C.

Preparation of Bioteam

  • Motor sprayers, irrigation systems, backpack sprayers, or even garden buckets can be used.
  • Ensure the application tank is completely clean before filling with water.
  • Fill the tank halfway with clean, chlorine-free, cold water (15–20 °C).
  • The total water amount should be adjusted so that at least 5–10 liters per plant is applied per 1 m².
  • All filters and sieves inside the tank must be removed to prevent clogging.
  • The spray nozzle should be larger than 0.5 mm (500 microns).
  • The entire Bioteam package is first mixed in a separate bucket with 10 liters of water for 5 minutes.
  • The homogeneous mixture is then transferred into the tank and the remaining water is added.

Application of Bioteam

  • A total of 0.5 million units per tree should be used.
  • Maximum pressure should not exceed 5 bar.
  • Continuous mixing is required during application to prevent sedimentation.
  • Mixing must continue until the end of the application.
  • After application, soil moisture should be maintained by irrigation.
